Tinnitus

Tinnitus is actually the pronounced symptom of various other related conditions connected to hearing loss. Ironically, this effect has become so pronounced that it virtually became a condition in itself.

There are several types of Tinnitus, the most common being Subjective Tinnitus because perception is distinctly different for each person inflicted. Although ringing is the most predominantly perceived sound, other noises people “hear” include buzzing, high-pitched whining, ticking and/or clicking, roaring, hissing, humming, beeping, and whistling. Unique sounds encountered have been described as the “whooshing” of water, crickets or locusts, and musical tunes or songs, like a radio playing in the distance. Objective Tinnitus, the second most common type, is so called based on similar perceptions that serve as a means of comparison in studies. Interestingly enough, Pulsatile Tinnitus is actually indicative to the surge of blood in or near the ear and exhibits a rhythm similar to the human pulse.

Tinnitus causes point out the conditions or diseases to which Tinnitus serves as a symptom. The most common cause of Tinnitus would be noise-induced hearing loss. Loud, abrupt noises jar the middle ear, so ringing and other after-effects are liable to occur. Otologic disorders, such as conductive hearing loss, infection in the outer ear, wax build-up, effusion of the middle ear, and sensory or sensorineural hearing loss, also induce Tinnitus, especially when damage is severe. Other causes include: psychogenic, metabolic and neurological conditions, as well as ototoxic medications.

Tinnitus treatments and any Tinnitus cure serve basically to either target the cause or to mask the sounds of Tinnitus with external noise. These outside noise, which are amplified, are referred to as Tinnitus maskers. Electrical stimulation, such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, and node implants, eliminate the Tinnitus sounds by soothing whatever anomaly is causing them. This electrical-based type of Tinnitus treatment especially works well on neurological disorders. Surgery reparation of the Perilymph Fistula, gamma knife radio surgery, Botulinum Toxin injections and Teflon implantation also provide usually successful results in overcoming Tinnitus.

Nutrients, diet practices and drugs that help Tinnitus include: Lidocaine injections, non-alcoholic drinks, zinc supplements, vitamin combinations, consuming no caffeine or salt, and no smoking. The last four are also among the many natural cures for Tinnitus. Remedies for Tinnitus are basically designed to bring balance and health to the senses so that the effects of Tinnitus will just disappear on their own.

The American Tinnitus Association conducts ongoing research on Tinnitus and provides up-to-date information for anyone curious about the symptomatic condition. Tinnitus groups in Ohio, New York, Massachusetts, California work together to help others understand their perceptions of sounds created by Tinnitus, and offer ongoing support.

Tinnitus is arguably the “non-condition” of human auditory dysfunctions. Although it is based primarily on psychological perception of sounds, Tinnitus is just as real and just as disconcerting as every real condition related to hearing loss. Ringing in the ears signifies something serious lurking elsewhere.
