Children's Hearing Protection

Although many forms of hearing impairment with children are uncontrollable and therefore unavoidable, such as those incurred by birth defects or infections (Otitis Media), attempts at protecting children’s ears does significantly reduce the problems that affect hearing. Children’s hearing protection, then, primarily refers to controllable circumstances, such as environmental conditions, such as increment or violent weather, smoke or fog caused by factory waste management or fuel-burning vehicles, or poisonous elements in the air caused by aerosol spray and other factors.

Hearing protection for children ranges from medically prescribed eardrops to alcohol application to manufactured ear caps. For the first, audiologists, otolaryngologists, or even regular doctors, frequently prescribe special eardrops to be applied to the ears in order to provide cleansing or wax loosening. After showing, an alcohol swab can be lightly inserted to clean out the ear canals. Yes, doctors advise against inserting swabs into the ears because they can either penetrate the eardrum and/or compact earwax against the eardrum, but doctors have also suggested that using alcohol swabs at times when ears are clean, such as right after an ear flushing, can prolong a clean and sterile state within the ear canals. Ear muffs are preferable for children to wear in winter or windy weather where debris, such as dust, dirt, or wood or glass shards, is tossed about. Such particles can and do get lodged in the ear and cause damage to the concha, canal, or tympanic membrane (eardrum). Ear muffs and even ear plugs do wonders at keeping out these many unwanted intruders. The second—ear plugs—are quite often used during swimming, as alien elements in the water, including chemicals, burn and irritate every part of the ear and can induce infection. Even during physically strenuous sports—boxing football, baseball—when all parts of the face or head are exposed to hazards ear guards are advised at all times. Those integrated into the construction of helmets should not be moved under any circumstances. These guards keep foreign bodies out of the proximity of the ears and yet continue to allow wearers the ability to easily listen to all sounds in the surrounding environment.

Hearing protection tips include, above all, constant monitoring and careful maintenance and cleaning of the ears. This includes all visible parts, external and internal. When these are protected well, the inner ear portion of the aural system is protected as well. Hearing protection may not prevent all intrusions or dysfunctional conditions, but they certainly minimize trouble and make life so much safer and comfortable for the children. That makes the biggest difference in the world.
