Waardenburg Syndrome

Waardenburg Syndrome is more of a distinction based on a set of physical attributes rather than a condition. One of the dominant, although by no means absolutely inclusive, characteristics of Waardenburg Syndrome is some degree of hearing loss, whether it is due to cosmetic or neurological abnormalities. Klein-Waardenburg Syndrome is 100% inherited from one or both parents. At least 50%-to-58% of the people with Waardenburg Syndrome has some degree of hearing loss, from hard-of-hearing to complete deafness.

Symptoms of Waardenburg Syndrome are all related to physical appearance, so detecting Waardenburg Syndrome is usually easy for those who know how to identify it. Classified into at least four types, Waardenburg Syndrome is distinguished primarily an abnormally wide space between the eyes, but other common traits include: patches of white or early-graying hair; white curl over the forehead; pale or glittering blue eyes, or each eye having a different color (typically one brown and the other blue); deep hairline and appended eyebrows; cleft chin; white pigment blotches; congenital deafness; a parent with WS; and unusual nose structure. These characteristics are not all inclusive in every case, but they are common and are indigenous to Waardenburg Syndrome. Klein-Waardenburg pictures clearly identify those who have the syndrome, whether all or only some of these traits are present.

The cause of Waardenburg Syndrome seems to be 100% inherited, although not much is known exactly where it came from or how it started out. Presumably, they are not indicators of particular culture, since people from all over exhibit these common traits. Considering that it’s not a disease either, such causes are not rooted in anything viral or bacterial. Therefore, the only explanation that can be used to appropriately describe the cause is that it’s genetic.

Treatments for Waardenburg Syndrome are based on the particular person, although there is no known cure for Waardenburg Syndrome. Physical abnormalities can be corrected through cosmetic surgery, and neural abnormalities can bypassed through the application of hearing assistance devices, such as a hearing aid or a cochlear implant, if a situation warrants its use. A Waardenburg Syndrome picture can help surgeons determine the best course of action.

Is it reversible or stoppable? Waardenburg Syndrome doesn’t appear to be terminable nature, but genetic counseling and therapy can affect physical make-up and the physical make-up of descendents so that life affected by Klein-Waardenburg Syndrome need not be unhappy, uncomfortable or disappointing. As a matter of fact, Life with Waardenburg Syndrome can be fulfilling for many born with this type of genetic make-up.
